I’m a pretty good people reader (as in constantly and within mere seconds), so if I feel a person is sincere, it doesn’t bother me, but when it’s said forcefully or for shock value, I get weirded out.
I have a knotwork pentacle on my car (it was a gift from a friend years ago when I more identified with that symbol and it’s pretty, so I never took it off) and we had a couple clients at work that noticed as they were leaving and asked whose it was. I told them it was mine and then was met with a life story and a battering of “Goddess Bless!” I said, “Thank you. Y’all, too. Have a good night,” and then they just kept repeating it, trying to get me to repeat it. This made me uncomfortable for several reasons, the first being they assumed I’m Wiccan. Yes, it’s a pentacle, but non-Wiccan Pagans use it, too. Secondly, they were kinda making a scene. Yes, the pentacle was on my car and yes, I acknowledged it, but this is the South. You can get away with stuff like that in the open because most people are simply unaware of its meaning or assume it’s a Star of David. By causing that kind of scene, you’re potentially outing someone that doesn’t want to be. And to top it all off, you’re being rude. It’s very clear when I’m uncomfortable; it’s all over my face. Why would you push it?
Eee. That is…erm. Yeah :/ Sorry you had to deal with that ><
I’m bold and open, but I’ve had people when I worked who anted to talk to me about my pentacle (when I wore one and identified with its symbolism)…and it’s like I’m glad you recognize it! But I’m not a Goddess Worshipper? (Not even then.) I gave you your video game, I have work to do… I don’t want to stand and talk to you about The Mother Goddess…My manager wouldn’t fire me for being pagan or anything, luckily, but he might want to fire me for not doing my job >.< (Of course this is mostly because the store I worked at needed probably 5 employees to accomplish what the district manager wanted but there was hardly ever 2 employees scheduled at a time…)
